Day 1: Core

I woke up from my core at 5am sharp, thanks to Jared. I felt as though a train smashed into my face. Head throbbing, eyes gritty. I can now see how sleep dep is used for torture. I have to learn to hop out of bed quickly, because as soon as I got vertical I felt alittle better.

Made a smoothie then Jared and I went on a 2 hour walk. Discussed life relationships, just a great reflecting period. I've always wanted to fit in an hour each day to sit and reflect, but always been so busy to do so. I hope Polyphasic allows me to do it.

I'm working on my Big Fat List of things to accomplish while on the new sleep schedule. I'm going to upload it once it's done later today. REALLY looking forward to my 8:30 nap.

Day 0: nap ?

My first day was a rough start. On my first core I was restless until 0500. Jared came to wake me up, but fell back alseep. Waking up at 0800, I continue the day feeling alright. I hadn't totally figure out my schedule yet (I had made one, but found conflicts that morning) and ended up napping at 1500, which got interrupted by noisey roommates, bleh.

I am currently in between homes, at the moment, so finding quiet places to nap is difficult (moving in to my new place on september 5th! only 6 days away!).

I had my first full nap at 1800, and felt great after waking up. I have a slight pinching on my temples I usually get after a day or two of not sleep. Very excited for my first real core nap.

My Sleep Experiment

My next term of school appears to be daunting. I have 4 courses full of math, CS, and neurology. I'm planning on joining fencing, parkour, lasertag, and dodgeball. I am always working with my close friends on a very exciting and large project aimed to launch in December. Oh and to top it all off, I'm leaving to Shanghai in January to start a new venture with a partner.

I have decided to cope with the work to take up, once again, Polyphasic Sleeping. It is simply just modifying your sleep schedule to include more then one sleep period per day. I will not be doing this alone! My good friend Jared is going down this terrible wonderful road with me. The style of schedule we've picked is dubbed "The Everyman"; it consists of a core nap (3 hours), along with 3 naps(20 min) spaced evenly throughout the day.

That's right. 4 hours of sleep only.  This gives me nearly two extra working days per week (9 day week, hell yeah).  My schedule is as follows:

core: 02:00 - 05:00
nap0: 08:30 - 08:50
nap1: 13:30 - 13:50
nap2: 18:00 - 18:20

This schedule fits all my classes, activities, plus fits snugly into most students sleeping (going to bed at 2am and waking up at 9).

I'm going to be following my progress via this blog. For friends, family, and outsiders to see how stupid/awesome this is.

1: My Sickness Algorithm

I don't like being sick. I'm going to assume the same about you as well. Over the last few days, I'm starting to feel the tell tale tickle of sickness creeping at the rear of my throat, my joints are getting just a little bit sore, and my nose is running just a bit more than usual.

Oh No!

As with most things in my life I have a process for when I get sick. I find it silly that most people approach being sick kinda willy nilly. If you want to get well as soon as possible, you should be consistent!

Diet:
-Stick to low complexity foods. Vegtable perticularly. Meat and diary will tax the body heavily in break it down int he stomach.
-Bright color foods are fantastic.
-Drink about 1 litre of Orange juice per day. High fluids, high vitamin C!
-Knorr makes an excellent line of "Color Soups" that I use when I'm sick. They are quick to make, easy to eat, very delious, and brimming for nutrients and vitamins.

Hygiene:
- Wash hands every 1-4 hours. Set timers if nessicary
- Wash bedding every 1-3 days.
- Change clothes twice daily.
- Shower twice a day.
- Go outside once per day. To air out your sick space, and for you to get fresh air.
- When you get sick, switch over to a Sick toothbrush. This should be cleaned in boiling water each night. When you're better switch back to your old one after a boiling water clean.
- Brush your teeth 3-4 a day (lightly). Your body needs to get the bad out, help it by cleaning your mouth often.

Runny Nose:
- I have found special mositure enriched tissues or whatever, don't help that much with dealing with a chapped nose. Penetan Cream is the best way to deal with a sore and red nose. Put a layer on before you sleep, and when you wake up it'll be ready to handle another day of tissue abuse.
- Seal and Remove of used tissues are fast as possible from your sick space.

Congestion:
- Take a hot shower twice daily
- Use "smell aids" such as vicks vaporub, or equivilent

Sore Throat:
- I strongly suggest using Buckley's. Take shots of it as often as you can.
- Use mouth wash and garble heavily to assist with the disinfect.

You may think this might be overkill, but I'd rather err on the side of being healthly than not.

1: Adventures with Autohotkey

I'm the type of guy who likes to fiddle with things. That combined with my programming knowledge, and my innate unhappiness with anything until I customize it, leads to great and sometimes unfortunate returns.

Today I bring you something from the former category. I am an avid user of Autohotkey. A program in which you write keyboard and mouse scripts for your compy. It's pretty simple, and very fun to use. I suggest you try it.

I'm going to share with you the awesomeness of hotstrings. Super simple, yet very awesome.

1: I misspell things heavily, and usually its the same thing over and over again. I type don;t when I should type don't, thign instead of thing. Quite annoying, so my script handles full word replacement, and also partial word.

::leik::like
:?:ign::ing
:?:n;t::n't

The scripts themselves are pretty easy, The question mark int he seconds ones let them be part of another word. Let's take a look at another nifty application of hotstrings.

:*:eml::scott.tolksdorf@gmail.com

I get very tired of typing out my email every time. This little hotstring will automatically convert the short text of "eml" to my full email.

Useful!
